From Palestine to San Antonio, from Melilla to the Polish border - united for a World without Walls

We are releasing this letter on July 8/9, two important dates within the Palestinian struggle. On July 8 we commemorate the 50th anniversary of the murder of Palestinian poet of resistance and the plight of refugees Ghassan Khanafani. July 9 marks the 18th anniversary of the ruling by the International Court of Justice on Israel’s apartheid Wall.
Yet, this letter is not about remembrance, it is about the immediate need for action.
The last weeks have brought to light with chilling cruelty the extent to which horrific crimes and human tragedies are an integral part of the walls that the powerful nations and their élites are building to fortify their borders and to preserve their supremacy and privilege.
It is more urgent than ever that we build on our collective force to dismantle these walls, from Palestine to European borders, the US and beyond.
A world of walls
In San Antonio, 53 people were killed in a truck as they tried to enter the US. This is already the third of such terrible killings in Texas alone over the last 5 years. There is no wall in San Antonio but there is a wall and a no-entry policy with illegal push backs along the US-Mexico border. Donald Trump elevated Israel’s apartheid wall as a model for his own policies and claimed that ‘walls work’. They do, if the aim is to kill people and subjugate them to racist, exclusionary policies.
For Palestinians the news of the deaths in San Antonio is a stark reminder of their own reality, described by Ghasan Khanafani’s famous novel “Men in the Sun''. Palestinian refugees displaced, desperate but at the same time determined to build a better life die in a truck as they attempt to smuggle from Iraq to Kuweit. The driver later complains: “Why didn't you bang on the sides of the tank? Why?”
It is the story and reality of those that are determined to risk all that is left to them for a better future. People across the globe are banging at the walls that keep them imprisoned, excluded, oppressed, segregated. It is the story and reality of a system of oppression that suffocates their voices and blames and criminalizes the oppressed.
Only 3 days earlier, at the wall that fences off the Spanish-controlled colonial enclave of Melilla, 51 migrants and refugees have been brutally murdered by Moroccan police and military forces, while Spanish police was supporting the crime launching teargas from the other side. They were part of many others who had organized themselves to climb together the colonial Wall of Melilla in order to make use of their right to seek asylum. Spain’s prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, described the mass attempt at justice as a “violent assault” and “an attack on the territorial integrity of Spain”. Moroccan forces on their end rushed to cover up their crime by burying the dead in mass graves they tried to hide.
The Moroccan minister of interior, heading the police forces, and his Israeli counterpart had met only days before. The rampant normalization brings together regimes that share politics of walls and human rights violations and any further ties with Israeli apartheid will only export more expertise of repression to Morocco.
When in 2018 Palestinians organized in the “Great Return March” to peacefully protest the wall Israeli apartheid erected around Gaza in 1995 and the brutal siege it imposes on the occupied coastal strip since 15 years, Israeli forces shot at will. 189 Palestinians were killed, hundreds maimed and over 8000 injured.
Many have to abandon and escape their homes, Palestinians fight for their return to their homes. The brutality of supremacy, colonialism, racism and apartheid is killing all alike.
In the meanwhile, Poland has announced on June 30 the completion of a 5.5 meters high, 186 km long wall along its borders with Belarus. The $407 million budget project militarizes and seals the border where migrants are being degraded, criminalized and arbitrarily detained. This wall is symbolic for Europe’s racist migration policies: While (white) refugees from Ukraine are welcomed and supported as they should be, non-white refugees trying to cross the Polish border are met with a wall, violence and pushbacks.
This June has marked 20 years after Israel started the construction of its apartheid Wall in the West Bank. 20 years later, Israel is fortifying its Apartheid Wall as part of its escalated ethnic cleansing practices, land grab and violence. Palestinian workers who are being forced to sneak through open parts of the Apartheid Wall to reach their work are bearing the brunt of the its fortification. On July 5, Ahmad Harb Ayyad, a Palestinian worker was beaten to death by Israeli soldiers as he was trying to access his work place near the Wall in Tulkarm.
For a World without Walls
On July 9, it will be 18 years since the International Court of Justice declared this Wall illegal and demanded the governments across the globe and the United Nations hear the banging at the wall, end their aid and assistance to Israel’s war crimes and crimes against humanity and take effective action to stop it. Not only Israeli apartheid continues to build walls - Israeli ideology, methodology and technology of walls has been globalized. Today walls are growing and killing ever more people across the world, while Israeli as well as military, security and other corporations profit from the enormous budgets that states allocate for these monuments of injustice and exclusion.
July 8 2022 marks 50 years since Israeli intelligence agents assassinated Ghassan Khanafani aiming to silence one of Palestine’s most powerful voices. Today, refugees and migrants are still dying in the heat of trucks smuggling them across borders.
It is urgent that we unite, listen to the demands of the oppressed and "the others", organize ourselves, raise our voices and redouble our efforts to overcome the systems of oppression that are ever more killing.
Together we can prevail.
Over the last 50 years we did overcome apartheid in South Africa, Latin American dictatorships have been overthrown and Indigenous leaders have won presidential elections. A second wave of progressive governments is coming to power in the subcontinent from where people are forced to leave to the US. Movements of black people and people of color have been able to bring the debate on structural racism to the mainstream. The call for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions, issued on the first anniversary of the ICJ decision July 9 2005, has effectively given birth to the Palestinian-led anti-apartheid movement.
Today it is crucial we stand together for a World without Walls and:
- For an end to the racist anti-migration policies and militarization of borders that criminalize and kill migrants.
- For an end to all military and security relations with Israel and its corporations that test their weapons and methods on Palestinians to then export them as battle-tested around the globe.
- For an end to the systems of structural racism and supremacy, including Israel’s 21st century version of settler colonialism enabled by a vicious system of apartheid and for a UN investigation into Israeli apartheid and the re-activation of the UN mechanisms to fight apartheid.
- For a truly democratic, just and ecological world.

De Palestina a San Antonio, de Melilla a la frontera polaca - unides por un Mundo sin Muros

Publicamos esta carta el 8/9 de julio, dos fechas importantes en el marco de la lucha palestina. El 8 de julio conmemoramos el 50 aniversario del asesinato del poeta palestino que narró la resistencia y la difícil situación de los refugiados Ghassan Khanafani. El 9 de julio marca el 18º aniversario del fallo de la Corte Internacional de Justicia sobre el Muro del Apartheid de Israel.
Sin embargo, esta carta no trata de la rememoración, sino de la necesidad inmediata de acción.
Las últimas semanas han sacado a la luz con una crueldad escalofriante hasta qué punto los crímenes horrendos y las tragedias humanas son parte integral de los muros que los estados poderosos y sus élites están construyendo para fortificar sus fronteras y preservar su supremacía y privilegio.
Es más urgente que nunca que aprovechemos nuestra fuerza colectiva para desmantelar estos muros, desde Palestina hasta las fronteras europeas, EE. UU. y más allá.
Un mundo de muros
En San Antonio, 53 personas murieron en un camión cuando intentaban ingresar a los EE. UU. Este ya es el tercero de estos terribles asesinatos en Texas solo en los últimos 5 años. No hay un muro en San Antonio, pero hay un muro y una política de prohibición de entrada con devoluciones ilegales a lo largo de la frontera entre Estados Unidos y México. Donald Trump elevó el muro del apartheid de Israel como modelo para sus propias políticas y afirmó que “los muros funcionan”. Lo hacen, si el objetivo es matar personas y someterlas a políticas racistas y excluyentes.
Para el pueblo palestino, la noticia de las muertes en San Antonio es un claro recordatorio de su propia realidad, descrita en la famosa novela de Ghasan Khanafani "Hombres al Sol". Refugiados palestinos desplazados, desesperados pero al mismo tiempo decididos a construir una vida mejor, mueren en un camión mientras intentan pasar de contrabando de Irak a Kuwait. El conductor luego se queja: “¿Por qué no golpeaste los costados del tanque? ¿Por qué?"
Es la historia y la realidad de aquellas personas que están decididas a arriesgar todo lo que les queda por un futuro mejor. Personas de todo el mundo están golpeando los muros que las mantienen encarceladas, excluidas, oprimidas y segregadas. Es la historia y realidad de un sistema de opresión que sofoca sus voces y culpabiliza y criminaliza a las personas oprimidas.
Solo 3 días antes, en el muro que cerca el enclave colonial española de Melilla, 51 inmigrantes y personas refugiadas han sido brutalmente asesinados por la policía y las fuerzas militares marroquíes, mientras que la policía española apoyaba el crimen lanzando gases lacrimógenos desde el otro lado. Formaban parte de muchas otras personas que se habían organizado para escalar juntas el muro colonial de Melilla para hacer uso de su derecho a solicitar asilo. El Primer Ministro de España, Pedro Sánchez, describió el intento masivo de alcanzar justicia como un "asalto violento" y "un ataque a la integridad territorial de España". Por su parte, las fuerzas marroquíes se apresuraron a encubrir su crimen enterrando a los muertos en fosas comunes que intentaron ocultar.
El Ministro del Interior marroquí, al frente de las fuerzas policiales, y su homólogo israelí se habían reunido sólo unos días antes. La normalización desenfrenada reúne a regímenes que comparten políticas de muros y violaciones de derechos humanos y cualquier vínculo adicional con el apartheid israelí solo exportará más experiencia en represión a Marruecos.
Cuando en 2018 el pueblo palestino se organizó en la “Gran Marcha del Retorno” para protestar pacíficamente contra el muro del apartheid israelí erigido alrededor de Gaza en 1995 y el brutal asedio que impone a la franja costera ocupada desde hace 15 años, las fuerzas israelíes dispararon a voluntad. 189 personas palestinas fueron asesinadas, cientos mutiladas y más de 8000 heridas.
Muchos tienen que abandonar y escapar de sus hogares, las personas palestinas están atrapadas luchan por su regreso a sus hogares. La brutalidad de la supremacía, el colonialismo, el racismo y el apartheid está matando a todes por igual.
Mientras tanto, Polonia anunció el 30 de junio la finalización de un muro de 5,5 metros de alto y 186 km de largo a lo largo de sus fronteras con Bielorrusia. El proyecto tiene un presupuesto de $407 millones, militariza y sella la frontera donde las personas migrantes están siendo degradadas, criminalizadas y detenidas arbitrariamente. Este muro es un símbolo de las políticas migratorias racistas de Europa: mientras que las personas refugiadas (blancas) de Ucrania son bienvenidas y apoyadas como deberían ser, las personas refugiadas que no son blancas que intentan cruzar la frontera polaca se encuentran con un muro, violencia y devoluciones.
Este junio ha marcado 20 años del inicio de la construcción por parte de Israel de su Muro del Apartheid en Cisjordania. 20 años después, Israel está reforzando su Muro como parte de sus crecientes prácticas de limpieza étnica, apropiación de tierras y violencia. Los trabajadores palestinos que se ven obligados a escabullirse a través de las partes abiertas del Muro del Apartheid para llegar a su trabajo son los más afectados por su fortificación. El 5 de julio, Ahmad Harb Ayyad, un trabajador palestino, fue asesinado a golpes por soldados israelíes cuando intentaba acceder a su lugar de trabajo cerca del Muro en Tulkarm.
Por un Mundo sin Muros
El 9 de julio, se cumplirán 18 años desde que la Corte Internacional de Justicia declaró ilegal este Muro y exigió a los gobiernos de todo el mundo y a las Naciones Unidas que escucharan los golpes en el muro y dejaron de dar ayuda y asistencia a los crímenes de guerra y crímenes de lesa humanidad de Israel, y más bien tomen medidas efectivas para detenerlas. No solo el apartheid israelí continúa construyendo muros: la ideología, la metodología y la tecnología israelíes de los muros se han globalizado. Hoy en día, los muros están creciendo y matando cada vez a más personas en todo el mundo, mientras que Israel y las corporaciones militares, de seguridad y de otro tipo se benefician de los enormes presupuestos que los estados asignan a estos monumentos de injusticia y exclusión.
El 8 de julio de 2022 se cumplen 50 años desde que agentes de inteligencia israelíes asesinaron a Ghassan Khanafani con el objetivo de silenciar una de las voces más poderosas de Palestina. Hoy en día, las personas refugiadas y migrantes siguen muriendo bajo el calor de los camiones que los pasan de contrabando a través de las fronteras.
Es urgente que nos unamos, escuchemos las demandas de las personas oprimidas y de "las otras", nos organicemos, alcemos la voz y redoblemos nuestros esfuerzos para superar los sistemas de opresión que cada vez son más mortíferos.
Juntes podemos prevalecer.
En los últimos 50 años superamos el apartheid en Sudáfrica, se derrocaron dictaduras latinoamericanas y líderes indígenas ganaron elecciones presidenciales. Una segunda ola de gobiernos progresistas está llegando al poder en el subcontinente desde donde la gente se ve obligada a irse a Estados Unidos. Los movimientos de personas negras y de color han podido llevar el debate sobre el racismo estructural al centro del debate. El llamado al boicot, la desinversión y las sanciones, emitido en el primer aniversario de la decisión de la CIJ del 9 de julio de 2005, ha dado a luz efectivamente al movimiento contra el apartheid liderado por palestinos.
Hoy es crucial que estemos juntas por un Mundo sin Muros y:
- Por el fin de las políticas racistas antimigratorias y de militarización de las fronteras que criminalizan y matan a las personas migrantes.
- Por el fin de todas las relaciones militares y de seguridad con Israel y sus corporaciones que prueban sus armas y métodos en el pueblo palestino para luego exportarlos como probados en batalla en todo el mundo.
- Por el fin de los sistemas de racismo estructural y de supremacía, incluida la versión israelí del colonialismo del siglo XXI baseada en un sistema vicioso de apartheid y para que la ONU investigue el apartheid israelí y reactive sus mecanismos para luchar contra el apartheid.
- Por un mundo verdaderamente democrático, justo y ecológico.

Wir veröffentlichen diesen Brief am 8. und 9. Juli, zwei wichtigen Daten im palästinensischen Kampf. Am 8. Juli gedenken wir des 50. Jahrestages der Ermordung des palästinensischen Dichters Ghassan Khanafani, der den Widerstand und die Not der Flüchtlinge aufzeichnete. Am 9. Juli jährt sich zum 18. Mal das Urteil des Internationalen Gerichtshofs zur israelischen Apartheidmauer.
Doch in diesem Brief geht es nicht um Erinnerung, sondern um den unmittelbaren Handlungsbedarf.
Die letzten Wochen haben mit erschreckender Grausamkeit ans Licht gebracht, inwieweit entsetzliche Verbrechen und menschliche Tragödien ein wesentlicher Bestandteil der Mauern sind, die mächtige Staaten und ihre Eliten errichten, um ihre Grenzen zu befestigen und ihre Vormachtstellung und Privilegien zu bewahren.
Es ist dringender denn je, dass wir unsere kollektive Kraft nutzen, um diese Mauern niederzureißen, von Palästina bis zu den europäischen Grenzen, den USA und darüber hinaus.
Eine Welt von Mauern
In San Antonio wurden 53 Menschen in einem Lastwagen getötet, als sie versuchten, in die USA einzureisen. Dies ist bereits der dritte dieser schrecklichen Morde allein in Texas in den letzten 5 Jahren. Es gibt keine Mauer in San Antonio, aber es gibt eine Mauer und eine Einreiseverbotspolitik mit illegalen Pushbacks entlang der Grenze zwischen den USA und Mexiko. Donald Trump erhob Israels Apartheidsmauer zum Vorbild für seine eigene Politik und erklärte, dass „Mauern funktionieren“. Sie tun es, wenn das Ziel darin besteht, Menschen zu töten und sie einer rassistischen und ausgrenzenden Politik zu unterwerfen.
Für Palästinenser*innen ist die Nachricht von den Toten in San Antonio eine deutliche Erinnerung an ihre eigene Realität, die in Ghasan Khanafanis berühmtem Roman "Männer in der Sonne" beschrieben wird. Palästinensische Flüchtlinge, vertrieben, verzweifelt und gleichzeitig entschlossen, sich ein besseres Leben aufzubauen, sterben in einem Lastwagen, als sie versuchen, sich vom Irak nach Kuweit schmuggeln zu lassen. Der Fahrer beschwert sich später: "Warum habt ihr nicht an die Seiten des Panzers geklopft? Warum??"
Es ist die Geschichte und Realität derjenigen, die entschlossen sind, alles, was ihnen bleibt, für eine bessere Zukunft zu riskieren. Überall auf der Welt pochen Menschen gegen die Mauern, die sie gefangen halten, die sie ausgrenzen, unterdrücken und ausgrenzen. Es ist die Geschichte und Realität eines Systems der Unterdrückung, das ihre Stimmen erstickt und die Unterdrückte die Schuld zuweist und sie kriminalisiert.
Nur drei Tage zuvor wurden 51 Migrant*innen und Geflüchtete an der Mauer, die die von Spanien kontrollierte Kolonialenklave Melilla abgrenzt, von marokkanischen Polizei- und Militärkräften brutal ermordet, während die spanische Polizei das Verbrechen von der anderen Seite aus mit Tränengas unterstützte. Die Toten gehörten zu den vielen anderen, die sich organisiert hatten, um gemeinsam die koloniale Mauer von Melilla zu erklimmen, um von ihrem Recht auf Asyl Gebrauch zu machen. Der spanische Ministerpräsident Pedro Sánchez bezeichnete den Massenansturm als "gewaltsamen Übergriff" und "Angriff auf die territoriale Integrität Spaniens". Die marokkanischen Streitkräfte ihrerseits beeilten sich, ihr Verbrechen zu vertuschen, indem sie die Toten in Massengräbern verscharrten, die sie zu verstecken versuchten.
Der für die Polizei zuständige marokkanische Innenminister und sein israelischer Amtskollege hatten sich erst wenige Tage zuvor getroffen. Die um sich greifende Normalisierung bringt Regime zusammen, die eine gemeinsame Politik der Mauern und Menschenrechtsverletzungen verfolgen, und jede weitere Verbindung mit der israelischen Apartheid wird nur noch mehr Expertise in Sachen Unterdrückung nach Marokko exportieren.
Als Palästinenser*innen sich 2018 zum "Großen Marsch der Rückkehr" versammelten, um friedlich gegen die 1995 errichtete israelische Apartheidmauer um den Gazastreifen und gegen die seit 15 Jahren andauernde brutale Belagerung des besetzten Küstenstreifens zu protestieren, schossen israelischen Streitkräfte willkürlich um sich. 189 Palästinenser*innen wurden getötet, Hunderte verstümmelt und über 8000 verletzt.
Viele müssen ihre Heimat verlassen und fliehen, Palästinenser*innen kämpfen für ihre Rückkehr in ihre Heimat. Die Brutalität von Vorherrschaft, Kolonialismus, Rassismus und Apartheid bringt alle gleichermaßen um.
Polen hat am 30. Juni die Fertigstellung einer 5,5 Meter hohen und 186 km langen Mauer entlang seiner Grenze zu Weißrussland bekanntgegeben. Das 407-Millionen-Dollar-Projekt militarisiert und versiegelt die Grenze, an der Migrant*innen erniedrigt, kriminalisiert und willkürlich festgehalten werden. Diese Mauer steht symbolisch für die rassistische Migrationspolitik Europas: Während (weiße) Geflüchtete aus der Ukraine willkommen geheißen und unterstützt werden, wie es sich gehört, werden nicht-weiße Geflüchtete, die versuchen, die polnische Grenze zu überqueren, mit einer Mauer, Gewalt und Pushbacks empfangen.
Im Juni dieses Jahres ist es 20 Jahre her, dass Israel mit dem Bau seiner Apartheidsmauer im Westjordanland begonnen hat. 20 Jahre später befestigt Israel seine Apartheid-Mauer als Teil seiner eskalierenden Praktiken der ethnischen Säuberung, des Landraubs und der Gewalt. Palästinensische Arbeiter, die gezwungen sind, sich durch offene Teile der Apartheidmauer zu schleichen, um zur Arbeit zu gelangen, tragen die Hauptlast ihrer Befestigung. Am 5. Juli wurde Ahmad Harb Ayyad, ein palästinensischer Arbeiter, von israelischen Soldat*innen zu Tode geprügelt, als er versuchte, seinem Arbeitsplatz in der Nähe der Mauer in Tulkarm zu erreichen
Für eine Welt ohne Mauern
Am 9. Juli ist es 18 Jahre her, dass der Internationale Gerichtshof die Mauer für illegal erklärte und die Regierungen in aller Welt und die Vereinten Nationen aufforderte, das Klopfen an der Mauer zu hören, ihre Hilfe und Unterstützung für Israels Kriegsverbrechen und Verbrechen gegen die Menschlichkeit einzustellen und wirksame Maßnahmen zu ergreifen, um Israel zu stoppen. Nicht nur die israelische Apartheid baut weiterhin Mauern - die israelische Ideologie, Methodik und Technologie der Mauern ist globalisiert worden. Heute wachsen Mauern und töten immer mehr Menschen auf der ganzen Welt, während israelische sowie Militär-, Sicherheits- und andere Unternehmen von den enormen Budgets profitieren, die die Staaten für diese Monumente der Ungerechtigkeit und Ausgrenzung bereitstellen.
Am 8. Juli 2022 ist es 50 Jahre her, dass der israelische Geheimdienst Ghassan Khanafani ermordete, um eine der mächtigsten Stimmen Palästinas zum Schweigen zu bringen. Auch heute noch sterben Geflüchtete und Migrant*innen in der Hitze der Lastwagen, in denen sie über Grenzen geschmuggelt werden.
Es ist dringend notwendig, dass wir uns zusammenschließen, den Forderungen der Unterdrückten und "der Anderen" Gehör schenken, uns organisieren, unsere Stimme erheben und unsere Anstrengungen verdoppeln, um die immer tödlicheren Unterdrückungssysteme zu überwinden.
Gemeinsam können wir es schaffen!
In den letzten 50 Jahren haben wir die Apartheid in Südafrika überwunden, lateinamerikanische Diktaturen wurden gestürzt und indigene Persönlichkeiten haben Präsidentschaftswahlen gewonnen. Eine zweite Welle fortschrittlicher Regierungen kommt auf dem Subkontinent an die Macht, von wo aus Menschen gezwungen sind, in die USA zu gehen. Bewegungen von Schwarzen und People of Color konnten die Debatte über strukturellen Rassismus in den Mainstream tragen. Der am ersten Jahrestag des Urteils des Internationalen Gerichtshofs vom 9. Juli 2005 herausgegebene Aufruf zu Boykott, Desinvestition und Sanktionen hat die von Palästinenser*innen geführte Anti-Apartheid-Bewegung wirksam ins Leben gerufen.
Heute ist es entscheidend, dass wir gemeinsam für eine Welt ohne Mauern eintreten:
- Für ein Ende der rassistischen Anti-Migrationspolitik und der Militarisierung der Grenzen, die Migrant*innen kriminalisieren und töten;
- Für ein Ende aller Militär- und Sicherheitsbeziehungen mit Israel und seinen Konzernen, die ihre Waffen und Methoden an Palästinenser*innen testen und sie dann als kampferprobt in die ganze Welt exportieren;
- Für ein Ende der Systeme des strukturellen Rassismus und der Vorherrschaft, einschließlich Israels Version des Siedlerkolonialismus des 21. Jahrhunderts, der auf einem schändlichen Apartheidsystem basiert und für eine UN-Untersuchung der israelischen Apartheid und die Re-Aktivierung der UN-Mechanismen zur Bekämpfung von Apartheid;
- Für eine wahrhaft demokratische, gerechte und ökologische Welt!
